Since GDPR regulations came into effect you may have noticed an increase in website cookie policy warnings. But what are cookies and why do websites need a cookie policy warning?
A website cookie is a small piece of data that’s sent from a website and stored on your computer. Cookies are the way a website remembers useful information about you and records your browsing activity, making it easy to find pages you’ve viewed before and keeping you logged into your website accounts.
A cookie policy warning lets you know the website you’re on uses cookies to store information about you. Once you’ve agreed (or not) to the website using cookies you won’t be shown the cookie policy warning for that website again unless you clear your cookies or go incognito.
Amlost all websites use cookies. Websites that do use cookies should have a cookie policy warning so that people using their website know what information is being captured and stored about them and where in the world that information is held.
Under GDPR website visitors have the right to know what information is being recorded about them, where in the world it’s held, how it’s used and how they can opt-out. Because cookies let websites gather behavioural information that can be used for targeted advertising it’s especially important to let visitors know how information about them is being used.
